Finesse 24 Lifting Keel Cutter, Teuke, Lying Essex - UNDER OFFER
Having owned a Finesse 21, we upgraded to a Finesse 24 in 1993. Teuke was one of the last to be built; she is no 66 and probably built about 1990. Her name is an old East Anglian dialect word for redshank, it mimics the call of the redshank (hence the design of the burgee!). Why did we acquire Finesses – because we like the look, the feel and the handling of a traditional wooden boat.
Over the last 20 years or so she has proved the ideal boat for pottering up and down the east coast. Her shallow draft is ideal for exploring the Backwaters, the upper reaches of the Deben and the Alde. We never quite made it all the way up to Snape, but very nearly!Video with family on-board
We never used her for very long cruises (crew not very good in heavy weather!), but she proved herself to be thoroughly reliable up to a force 5, reefed as necessary. Beating to windward, not her best suit, but given a fair wind she purrs along. She is well balanced and simple to sail. She is easy to manoeuvre; manhandling the anchor is no problem and she will make 4/4.5 knots under engine. If the rather incompetent crew can reverse her out of her recent rather tight marina mooring, she must be easily controllable going backwards. We have used her for family sailing – you can fit 6 in the cockpit with a bit of a squeeze! She is ideal for short outings as well as longer cruises.
We will miss those tranquil evenings spent in a quiet creek somewhere. We are only selling her because the skipper’s health is not now good enough to sail. In fact the reason why we have no photos of Teuke under full sail is that the decision to sell her was made after she came out of the water and we only then realised that we had no pictures of her looking her best.
Every year her sails have been maintained by Suffolk Sails and repaired/replaced as necessary. She has spent each winter under cover in a barn at Bucklers Farm. All her woodwork has been inspected, repaired, varnished and painted every year. In the first few years before he retired Alan Platt himself did this work and after he retired, Terry Clarke from Ipswich looked after her. Her engine has been maintained/serviced by Volspec at Wolversone. A record of everything that has been done to Teuke is available.
It is very rare to find a boat as well cared for as Teuke. She is absolutely gorgeous! If you are in the market for a craft like this you will not find a better one. Call me!
